What kind of support do they need?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14129355364950004548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876502085465766394.post-1027314775389071582015-05-17T05:10:47.250-05:002015-05-17T05:10:47.250-05:00Took me a while, but I finally learned that instea...Took me a while, but I finally learned that instead of trying to bring our Children and Grandchildren into our notion of Church, We should be adopting THEIRS! Nienstedt seems incapable of such wisdom.<br />John Chuchmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15078522877428634122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876502085465766394.post-88467093323197484982015-05-16T19:23:54.201-05:002015-05-16T19:23:54.201-05:00Sent by Mary Lynn Murphy, St. Paul

Yes, the parish got itself in this box because it lacked the guts to follow through... when the planners must have known that the Archbishop might slip from the shadows of the abuse crisis- long enough to crack down on gay kids again. When will the people wise up? As a parent of an LGBT person, I am impatient with cowering parents and supportive church communities who WIIl NOT STAND UP on this intimate and critical issue when young people need them to do so. The Archbishop is not the only one who has let gay kids down. All of the parishes, (not just CTK), the parish priests, Catholic school educators, parents, and all who bow to the Archbishop in regard to this conference and all other LGBT related incidences, are also at fault. Time to rise up, end the silence, hold the conferences wherever and whenever the people please, and let the leadership of the laity, and the young people themselves shine through. His action in countermanding the decisions of the parish and the student planners in this event is a violation of their freedom. Of course, he has the power to make them buckle as well as the authority to use that power, but is it a wise and just use of the power to intervene in the free decisions of adult parish administrators and student planners? The Archbishop can not in the future say one credible word about religious freedom because he has demonstrated a gross misunderstanding of the use of his own power to coerce behavior. I'm also wondering if any word of his about love, unity, or justice can carry any weight. It makes me weep because I had hope that he had gained insight over the last several years of struggle with the GLBT community.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14129355364950004548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876502085465766394.post-85711838984425937152015-05-15T06:29:53.995-05:002015-05-15T06:29:53.995-05:00This is a dangerous time for the Catholic Church, ...This is a dangerous time for the Catholic Church, as it isn't an institution that deals well with change OR lay opinions (or, even worse, changing lay opinions), and yet it now has both in large amounts. As for the students, well, In the end & quite sadly, these wonderful young people will eventually have to make a choice between being their authentic selves or leaving the Roman Catholic Church, as this story is yet more proof that they can't have both. An old saying goes "Never stay where you are not wanted", which rings true here. The good news is that there is life beyond the Catholic Church for these students.
