Paul Lakeland is the director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Fairfield University. He is active in the American Academy of Religion, the Catholic Theological Society of America, and the Workgroup for Constructive Theology. His two most recent writings, both winners of Catholic Press Association awards, are The Liberation of the Laity: In Search of an Accountable Church and Catholicism at the Crossroads: How the Laity Can Save the Church.


Writes Lakeland:

"So if laity make up at least 98% of the church, why do so many of us still think of priests and bishops as the church? What would the church of the future need to look like if our under-standing of priest is, instead, relative to the layperson? What does Pope Francis have to say about the role of the laity in the world and the responsibilities the baptismal priesthood places on each of us who are baptized in Christ’s name.

As an apostolic church, each of us is called to participation in the very real work of going outward and spreading the gospel message rather than just conforming to rules or turning to clergy for sacraments as a means to our own individual salvation. What needs to change, what can remain the same, and what really needs to happen as we move into this church of the future?"
